Brain Injury & Sports Neurology Center
About Our Center
Our doctors and specialists at the Barrow Brain Injury & Sports Neurology Center understand the uncertainty and fear that can accompany concussions and other brain injuries. We know that you have questions about your symptoms and prognosis, and our accomplished team of highly trained specialists is here to provide you with the answers you need.
The Brain Injury & Sports Neurology Center at Barrow Neurological Institute at Dignity Health St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center is the first of its kind in the nation. We offer comprehensive, compassionate, cutting-edge treatment and rehabilitation for adolescents and adults with concussions, traumatic brain injuries, and spinal cord injuries.
In addition, we have led the nation in creating new and fun ways to help prevent and address concussions in high school and youth sports. Our Brainbook concussion education program is the first of its kind in the country and has been taken by nearly every high school athlete in the state of Arizona.
Our commitment to concussion prevention and identification means that we also excel in the diagnosis and treatment of concussions and post concussion symptoms. If you have been diagnosed with a concussion, brain injury, or spinal cord injury, please give us a call at (602) 406-4323 to find out more about our programs and services.
The Barrow Difference
The Brain Injury & Sports Neurology Center at Barrow Neurological Institute is the first of its kind in the nation. We provide comprehensive, compassionate, and cutting-edge treatment for adolescents and adults with traumatic brain injuries.
We also provide resources for and partner with athletic trainers to ensure that concussions are diagnosed and treated quickly when they occur.
Leading Center for Concussion Education
Beyond subspecialized clinical care, we lead the nation in concussion education and outreach. Nearly every high school student in Arizona has taken Barrow Brainbook, a web-based concussion course. Brainbook is the country’s first mandated education and testing module for student athletes.
Additionally, we offer a concussion baseline testing program and sideline consultations via telemedicine for high school athletes. We provide these services through the Barrow Concussion Network, a consortium of distinguished organizations in Arizona. These partnerships enable the exchange of expertise and resources, supporting our common goal of making sports safer for Arizona athletes.
Team of Experts
As part of the largest neuroscience institution in the United States, our Center offers patients with access to a variety of specialists. They include:
- Headache Neurologists
- Occupational Therapists
- Physical Therapists
- Social Workers
- Speech-Language Pathologists
- Sports Medicine Physician
- Sports Neurologists/Concussion Experts
Serving the Underserved
Although we see many athletes in our clinic, they represent just one subset of patients affected by traumatic brain injuries. In 2012, our Center developed a new program to address an underserved population in our community: survivors of domestic violence.
We partner with community shelters to identify individuals with traumatic brain injuries as a result of domestic abuse. We treat these individuals for free in our clinic, regardless of their insurance coverage, thanks to generous donations and grant funds. All patients in this program undergo evaluation by a neurologist who specializes in traumatic brain injury and are connected with a social worker for help navigating the health care system.
Our team is also conducting clinical research to raise awareness and improve treatment for traumatic brain injuries in domestic violence survivors.
The message of Barrow Brainbook is an important one – concussions need to be taken seriously. This program not only emphasizes that point but also educates student-athletes on how to recognize the signs and symptoms.
