The Barrow Difference
The Barrow Difference – Concussion & Brain Injury Center
The Concussion & Brain Injury Center at Barrow Neurological Institute is the first of its kind in the nation. We provide comprehensive, compassionate, and cutting-edge treatment for adolescents and adults with traumatic brain injuries.
We also provide resources for and partner with athletic trainers to ensure that concussions are diagnosed and treated quickly when they occur.
Leading Center for Concussion Education
Beyond subspecialized clinical care, we lead the nation in concussion education and outreach. Nearly every high school student in Arizona has taken Barrow Brainbook, a web-based concussion course. Brainbook is the country’s first mandated education and testing module for student athletes. For younger athletes, we launched an educational video game called Barrow Brainball.
Additionally, we offer a concussion baseline testing program and sideline consultations via telemedicine for high school athletes. We provide these services through the Barrow Concussion Network, a consortium of distinguished organizations in Arizona. These partnerships enable the exchange of expertise and resources, supporting our common goal of making sports safer for Arizona athletes.

Serving the Underserved
Although we see many athletes in our clinic, they represent just one subset of patients affected by traumatic brain injuries. In 2012, our Center developed a new program to address an underserved population in our community: survivors of domestic violence.
We partner with community shelters to identify individuals with traumatic brain injuries as a result of domestic abuse. We treat these individuals for free in our clinic, regardless of their insurance coverage, thanks to generous donations and grant funds. All patients in this program undergo evaluation by a neurologist who specializes in traumatic brain injury and are connected with a social worker for help navigating the health care system.
Our team is also conducting clinical research to raise awareness and improve treatment for traumatic brain injuries in domestic violence survivors.
