Spine Program

About Our Program

Your back is, literally and figuratively speaking, the center of your body. As such, even minor back pain can impact virtually every aspect of your daily life.

At Barrow Neurological Institute at Dignity Health St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center, our spine surgeons and back pain specialists understand how debilitating back pain can be. Therefore, we strive to give you every option to conquer your back and spine problems and return to an active, healthy, and fulfilling life.

Our neurosurgeons and physiatrists believe in making a concerted effort to fix your back using conservative treatment before trying surgical repairs. And, if you do need surgery, our spinal neurosurgeons are experts at minimally invasive techniques that can help drastically reduce your recovery time.

Neurosurgical Knowledge

The bones of your spine surround and protect one of the largest and most complex neurological structures in your body—your spinal cord. Spinal neurosurgeons undergo an intensive, 7-year training program that intimately acquaints them with the brain, spinal cord, and the bony structures surrounding them.

In addition, most of our spine surgeons have undergone additional fellowship training focused on the treatment of rare and complex spinal disorders or minimally invasive spine surgery.

Conservative and Minimally Invasive Treatment Options

We realize that the prospect of surgery on your back can be scary. At Barrow, our spine surgeons realize this, and they, along with our expert care team, will work closely with you to determine if your back problems can be resolved without surgery.

Our spine surgeons have one of the largest bodies of collective experience with minimally invasive spine surgery in the Southwestern United States.

I was nervous about the surgery, but I just felt I was in good hands. Dr. Porter is an extremely great doctor. He’s very smart, he had great recommendations, he speaks all over the world, he’s on top of all the things to do, and I think he’s a very calming person too.

I’m very thankful for Dr. Snyder and very thankful for Barrow. Having the surgery done and feeling how I feel today, it’s just priceless.
