    Complex Spine Surgery Fellowship

Qualified applicants for the Complex Spinal Neurosurgery Fellowship at Barrow Neurological Institute have graduated from either an AOA or ACGME-accredited neurosurgery residency program. Foreign-trained applicants must hold a valid ECFMG certificate and must have had at least 36 months of accredited postgraduate training in the U.S.

    Spine Fellowship Program Description

This 1-year spine fellowship consists of two broad areas of study:

    1. Clinical training in the operating room and during clinic time.
    2. Research in the Kelly Laboratory studying the mechanical behavior of the spine in its normal condition and after injury, disease, or surgical interventions.

Fellows are expected to participate in both of these areas. The fellowship is accredited by the Society of Neurological Surgeons and accepts two fellows a year.

Complex Spinal Neurosurgery Fellowship Program Goals

To specialize and develop advanced knowledge and technical skills in the management of patients with complex spine disorders as well as prepare for academic careers and consultative services related to spinal injuries and disease.

    Clinical Duties

Spine fellows become an integral part of the Department of Neurosurgery and are to actively participate in the training and education of residents and medical students. Fellows will work on the clinical neurosurgery service, take junior attending call and in the outpatient clinic managing and treating all disorders of the spine including degenerative disease, neoplastic disease, trauma, and infections.
