Barrow EEG Department
The EEG Department at Barrow Neurological Institute offers comprehensive electroneurodiagnostic services to help physicians diagnose and manage epilepsy and many other neurological disorders. We can provide the following tests in our laboratory:
- Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR)
- Electroencephalogram (EEG) up to two hours
- Electroretinogram (ERG)
- Somatosensory Evoked Potentials (SSEP)
- Visual Evoked Potentials (VEP)
The Barrow Difference
The EEG Department at Barrow is staffed with a specialized team of registered EEG technologists, some of whom hold multiple registrations, and fellowship-trained clinical neurophysiologists and epileptologists. The EEG Department is part of our Level 4 epilepsy center, which can provide full epilepsy services from diagnosis to surgery.
What Patients Can Expect
During an electroneurodiagnostic test, an EEG technologist will apply electrodes to the patient’s scalp and possibly other areas. The technologist will fully explain the specifics of the test and answer any questions the patient may have.
For an EEG, the patient may be asked to view a flashing strobe light or hyperventilate during the test. They may be asked to arrive to the appointment sleep deprived and then be monitored via video while they attempt to sleep during the test.
For evoked potentials tests, the technologist will present the patient with stimuli. This may include visual stimuli, auditory clicks, or a mild electrical current.
A clinical neurophysiologist or epileptologist will read the test within 48 hours and send a report to the office of the ordering physician.
A Note About COVID-19
Patients do not need be tested for COVID-19 before their appointments. They will undergo a COVID-19 screening upon entering Barrow Neurological Institute. This process will include having their temperature taken and answering a questionnaire. Patients with a fever or who are exhibiting symptoms will be sent home and have their appointment rescheduled.
Patients who clear the screening will check in at the hospital’s main admitting office and then be directed to the EEG Department, where they will be escorted to an exam room by a member of the EEG team.
For questions or concerns about our COVID-19 policies, please contact laboratory manager Sarah Baran at (602) 406-6346.
