Barrow Partners with ASU Students to Engineer Rehab Devices

Barrow has partnered with Arizona State University to provide engineering students the opportunity to help develop medical rehabilitation devices.

Physicians and therapists at Barrow brainstormed about 15 ideas, and the mechatronics device class chose three of them to pursue. The devices are now in the process of being patented.

The students created a more comfortable alternative to the traditional splint for people recovering from back surgery or injury as well as a shoulder assist device to relieve shoulder pain in people who use wheelchairs. They are still developing the third device: a walker that vibrates when users put too much pressure on the handles so that users don’t contort their backs and arms by leaning on the walker too much.
