Study Shows ALS Patients May Benefit From More Glucose

A study co-authored by Barrow researchers Dr. Rita Sattler and Dr. Robert Bowser found that people with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) may benefit from more glucose.

It is widely known that people with the neurodegenerative disease experience increased metabolic activity, known as hypermetabolism, but how these observations relate to metabolic changes at the cellular level has not been well understood.

The new study, led by the University of Arizona, found that increasing glucose delivery to motor neurons affected by ALS allowed those cells to live longer and function better.
