Helmet Your Head
Helmet Your Head®, a safety program developed by Barrow Neurological Institute, aims to prevent head and traumatic brain injuries and the effect that these injuries have on individuals, families, and communities. The program promotes the use of helmets during recreational activities to prevent brain injury. Barrow is the national training center for the Helmet Your Head program.
As healthcare costs continue to rise, the short- and long-term effects of brain injury take their toll on society in many ways. Consistent and correct use of helmets can prevent these tragic injuries and the societal costs that accompany them.
“We want to make wearing a helmet a habit, just like wearing a seat belt in a car,” stresses Robert Spetzler, MD, Director of Barrow Neurological Institute. “We also encourage people to helmet the heads of those they love—children, friends, parents and siblings. Your reminder could save their life.”
The Helmet Your Head curriculum has been designed to be used in a variety of settings. . Individuals learn about the consequences of sustaining brain injury during common activities such as bicycling, rollerblading, skateboarding, horseback-riding, rock climbing, skiing and other sports.
The Helmet Your Head program is designed for adults, students, teachers and other community partners.
