Abdullah Ahmad, PhD

Associate Professor
Neurobiology

Abdullah Ahmad, PhD, is an associate professor in the Department of Translational Neuroscience at Barrow Neurological Institute.

Dr. Ahmad’s expertise includes working with preclinical models of acute and chronic neurotrauma and neurodegeneration. He was among the first to investigate the neuroinflammatory role of prostaglandins and the downstream cascade of the cyclooxygenase (COX) pathway in acute neurologic conditions. His novel findings suggest that each prostaglandin and its respective receptor have distinct roles in preventing or promoting neurotrauma. Dr. Ahmad is a member of the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association, the International Brain Research Organization, the Indian Academy of Neurosciences, the Society for Free Radical Research International, and the Society for Neuroscience.

Dr. Ahmad earned his master’s and doctorate degrees in chemistry from Aligarh Muslim University in Aligarh, India. He began his postdoctoral training in neurotoxicology at Hamdard University in New Delhi, India and then received an American Heart Association postdoctoral fellowship to study stroke at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.

Dr. Ahmad’s research at Barrow focuses on potential therapeutics targeting specific pathways to limit brain damage and improve functional outcomes in models of ischemic stroke, hemorrhagic stroke, traumatic brain injury, and vascular cognitive impairment. More specifically, Dr. Ahmad and his team are investigating early brain injury (EBI) and vasospasm after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). Persistent vasospasm can lead to delayed cerebral ischemia (DCI). Therefore, one of the focuses of Dr. Ahmad’s work is to test potential therapeutics that can limit vasospasm, brain damage, and functional deficits after SAH.
