Dr. Michael Waters Named Director of Barrow Stroke Program

Barrow Neurological Institute has named Michael Waters, MD, PhD, as the director of its Stroke Program and Neurovascular Division. Dr. Waters is a nationally prominent and respected stroke physician and scientist who joined Barrow from the University of Florida.

“I’m elated to have joined the renowned medical team at Barrow,” says Dr. Waters. “My goal is to create new treatments for stroke and develop effective ways to provide timely diagnoses and treatments for Valley stroke patients.”

Stroke is the nation’s leading cause of serious and long term disability in adults. Each year nearly 800,000 people suffer a stroke in the United States and approximately 8,000 occur in Maricopa County.

“Dr. Waters is a nationally renowned stroke neurologist, and we are happy he has joined the Barrow team,” says Jeremy Shefner, MD, Associate Director and Chair of Neurology at Barrow. “With the addition of Dr. Waters, Barrow is well positioned to expand our stroke services and to build a vigorous stroke research program.”

Dr. Waters expertise includes stroke and neurovascular disease, including signs, symptoms, diagnostics and treatments. His research studies include genetic mechanisms and neuroprotection in stroke. He’s also investigating various stroke treatments.

Dr. Waters received his master’s degree in genetics from Penn State and his doctorate in biochemistry and molecular biology from the University of Florida College of Medicine. He completed his residency training at UCLA and his fellowship at Cedars Sinai Medical Center. He is board certified in neurology by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology with subspecialty board certification in vascular neurology.
