U.S. News & World Report Names Barrow One of Nation’s Best Hospitals

U.S. News & World Report’s annual listing of top hospitals is the most respected of all national rankings. Barrow Neurological Institute is ranked No. 15 in this year’s neurology and neurosurgery category, making it the highest nationally ranked hospital in this specialty in Arizona, in the Southwest region, and in a 20-state area between the Mississippi River and the West Coast.

“Barrow stands apart from the other top-ranked centers in the nation because as a dedicated institute it focuses on just one specialty and is outside the limitations of a traditional university medical center,” says Michael Lawton, MD, Barrow’s President and CEO and Chairman of Neurosurgery. “This unique position gives Barrow greater opportunities to innovate and lead in the neurosciences. Barrow is the only dedicated neurosciences institute in the top 15 ranked programs that includes other university medical centers. This confirms that when dedicated and talented medical experts target one specialty, they can push the therapeutic boundaries and find the answers to complicated neurological conditions that other centers do not have the resources to accomplish.”

Barrow Neurological Institute at Dignity Health St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center is known throughout the world for providing cutting-edge treatment for people with brain and spine diseases, disorders, and injuries; medical education; and innovative research. Barrow performs more brain surgeries than any other hospital in the United States. The hospital has the largest neurosurgery residency program in the United States, training more neurosurgeons than anywhere in the world. Barrow is also home to the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center.

“St. Joseph’s is delighted to again be named as one of the best hospitals in the nation by U.S. News and World Report, says Patty White, President and CEO of St. Joseph’s. “I want to especially congratulate our amazing staff and physicians, who are without question, among the best in the nation. We are proud to be able to provide our patients with groundbreaking treatments and personal care that is based on Humankindness.”

St. Joseph’s is considered a sought-after destination hospital for treating the most complex cases from throughout the world. Every day, approximately 20 percent of the hospital’s patients have traveled from outside of Arizona and the United States to seek treatment at St. Joseph’s.
