photo of a student research assistant at microscopeFor more than 20 years, research laboratories at Barrow Neurological Institute have provided college students their first opportunity to learn to conduct scientific research in a professional setting via the the Science Program for an Upward Route (SPUR).

College students can apply for the Summer Undergraduate Research Program, which provides full-time summer employment as a research intern under the direction of a staff high school neuroscience research assistantresearch scientist in a Barrow laboratory.

The purpose of this program is to provide an academic environment for “hands on” biomedical research for college students. The objectives of this program is to:

    1. Enhance knowledge of basic biological principles and the mechanisms that contribute to the cause and treatment of disease
    2. Teach students to evaluate the scientific literature and to develop communication skills
    3. Teach students to use advanced scientific techniques and to address scientific questions
    4. Provide the environment to develop scientific projects that are presented at local and national scientific competitions and/or in scientific literature
