For more than 20 years, research laboratories at Barrow Neurological Institute have provided college students their first opportunity to learn to conduct scientific research in a professional setting via the the Science Program for an Upward Route (SPUR).
College students can apply for the Summer Undergraduate Research Program, which provides full-time summer employment as a research intern under the direction of a staff research scientist in a Barrow laboratory.
The purpose of this program is to provide an academic environment for “hands on” biomedical research for college students. The objectives of this program is to:
- Enhance knowledge of basic biological principles and the mechanisms that contribute to the cause and treatment of disease
- Teach students to evaluate the scientific literature and to develop communication skills
- Teach students to use advanced scientific techniques and to address scientific questions
- Provide the environment to develop scientific projects that are presented at local and national scientific competitions and/or in scientific literature
