What Sets Our Second Opinion Program Apart

Our Patient Experience

Where you get your care matters—and while being diagnosed with a neurological condition is often scary, you’ve come to the right place.

Barrow Neurological Institute is one of the busiest neurosurgical centers in the world, and our highly skilled and experienced neurosurgeons represent all subspecialties within the field. Each year, we treat more than 58,000 patients, and our neurosurgeons perform nearly 6,000 brain and spine surgeries. Because of our high volume, our neurosurgeons are familiar with the rarest and most challenging conditions. It’s not uncommon for patients from around the globe to be treated here.

Newsweek ranks Barrow as one of the top specialty hospitals for neurosurgery in the world. Meanwhile, U.S. News and World Report consistently ranks Barrow as a top center in the country for neuro-rehabilitation. We employ more certified neuroscience registered nurses (CNRN) than any other hospital globally, and our neuro-rehabilitation programs have earned CARF accreditation—the highest level of accreditation possible.

Ease—and Ease of Cost

It’s easy to get a neurosurgical second opinion from our team of experts: fill out a short form telling us about your diagnosis and medical history, upload your medical images and records to our secure portal, and make a non-refundable $100 payment by credit card. You can even have your doctor submit your second opinion request on your behalf.

Leading in Research and Innovation

We’re committed to advancing our understanding of neurological diseases through scientific research and translating our findings to the clinic, where they can improve patient outcomes.

Because we participate in hundreds of clinical trials at any given time, many of our neurosurgery patients have access to these clinical trials. In fact, the Ivy Brain Tumor Center at Barrow is the largest Phase 0 trials program in the world. What’s more, our neurosurgeons have pioneered numerous techniques and procedures, such as cardiac standstill and thoracoscopic spine surgery. They are true leaders in minimally invasive, microscopic, and robotic surgical techniques.

A Commitment to Education

Our neurosurgeons are more than just doctors: they’re teachers at one of the most sought-after neurosurgical residency and fellowship programs in the world. In 2022 and 2023, Doximity ranked Barrow second in the nation for our neurosurgical residency program.

Attending neurosurgeons travel to Barrow to learn the most advanced techniques, and our physicians regularly publish scholarly articles and speak at international conferences to share their knowledge and expertise.

Our International Patient Program

Our International Patient Program pledges to make treatment easier for patients visiting Barrow from other countries. We make a point to consider individual preferences and cultural, linguistic, and religious expectations so that Barrow can feel as close to home as possible.

If you choose to travel internationally to visit our team, we can help you with logistics, like scheduling appointments and making lodging arrangements, so that you and your loved ones can focus on treatment and recovery.

State-of-the-Art Facilities

Barrow is home to the 430,000-square-foot Robert F. Spetzler Neuroscience Tower housing 219 beds. These include 64 dedicated neuro-intensive care beds and 32 neuro-telemetry beds. All rooms in the Neuroscience Tower are private and offer ample space for a loved one to stay overnight.

Additionally, Barrow boasts 11 advanced neurosurgical operating rooms and two neuro-endovascular surgical suites. And our footprint continues to grow: our five-story, 122,000-square-foot Neuroplex opened in 2021, giving Barrow a centralized point of entry and providing advanced new facilities for our neurosurgery offices, as well as select neurology and ENT clinics.
