Barrow Neurological Institute
Opening Minds. Saving Lives.
Barrow Neurological Institute is where the future of neuroscience is happening now. Join us as our third research building comes to life—the home base for opening minds and saving lives. In our newest initiative, six mysteries of the mind will be explored through translational neuroscience research, including: movement and perception, emotion, neural plasticity, intelligence, memory, and consciousness.
Movement + Perception
Here, the next generation of therapeutics for those with debilitating neurological conditions is brought to life. Epilepsy neurosurgeons and neurologists will work alongside neuro-engineers to expand the frontiers of brain-computer interfaces, neural prostheses, and robotics to create a “new” normal for people with intractable epilepsy and paralysis, among other conditions.
Emotion
In this domain, newfound hope and promising insights are turned over for those struggling with depression, anxiety, PTSD, addiction, and obesity. Our functional neurosurgeons, psychiatrists, and neuropsychologists will dive into deep brain stimulation, brain-computer interfaces, and neuropharmacology to lay the groundwork for a deeper well of relief for patients as they unravel the origins of these conditions.
Neural Plasticity
What can be done with the natural ability of the neurons in your brain to expand and reorganize in response to trauma or other stimuli? Here, our neuroscientists, stroke neurologists, and functional neurosurgeons will tap into the phenomenon of neural plasticity as they utilize patient-derived stem cell therapies, gene therapies, and small molecule therapies for stroke, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and a host of other conditions affecting the brain’s ability to process and react.
Intelligence
Intelligence—or the ability to arrive at solutions to complex problems—is at the heart of being human. But where does our intelligence come from, and can we understand it? Using functional MRI and contemporary imaging, cognitive neuroscientists and neuroradiologists will probe the depths of the mind to provide unprecedented insights into the human mind.
Memory
Our memories are an anchor for our most authentic selves; they make us who we are. Yet, for some, the ability to store and recall information becomes severely impaired. Using memory science, data science, artificial intelligence, augmented reality, and virtual reality, our neuroscientists and neurologists will unearth new insights into the act of creating, storing, and recalling memories.
Consciousness
The movie that is your life, playing out in real-time within your mind—this is the crux of consciousness. In this realm, our neurosurgeons and critical care neurologists will dissect the underpinnings of consciousness and coma, and look for drug interventions and deep brain stimulation to reverse coma, restoring the brain’s perception within and around us.
