Experts When You Need Answers

An arteriovenous malformation (AVM) diagnosis can be frightening. When these blood vessel tangles rupture, they can be disabling or even life-threatening. This is where we can help. Barrow Neurological Institute neurosurgeons are internationally renowned for their expertise in AVM treatment and see some of the most challenging cases. Success with the treatment of an AVM is dependent on skill and experience.

At Barrow, our neurosurgeons have operated on a combined total of more than 2,500 AVMs—many in deep and challenging areas of the brain. Through Barrow Second Opinion, our world-renowned neurosurgeons can recommend and provide the best course of treatment for your AVM based on its size and location, whether it’s conventional open surgery, endovascular surgery, radiosurgery, or a combination of treatments.

MICRONEUROSURGERY

Our neurosurgeons are experienced in conventional AVM surgery. Using a high-powered microscope, the surgeon carefully removes the abnormal tangle of blood vessels from the brain or spinal cord and redirects blood flow.

ENDOVASCULAR SURGERY

Endovascular neurosurgery allows the surgeon to eliminate blood flow to the AVM without opening up the skull or back. The surgeon inserts a catheter into a major artery in the body, navigates it to the site of the AVM, and uses it to insert special materials to seal off the AVM.

RADIOSURGERY

Radiosurgery involves no incisions and can shrink AVMs over time. Precise beams of radiation damage and scar the tangled blood vessels, reducing blood flow and lowering the risk of rupture. Barrow offers the CyberKnife and Gamma Knife systems.
