Clinical Observers & Visiting Scholars

Learn at One of the Most Dynamic Centers for Neurology and Neurosurgery in the World

At Barrow Neurological Institute, we welcome visiting scholars and observers from around the world who share our commitment to advancing neuroscience through education, research, and innovation.

Since 1962, Barrow has been recognized nationally and internationally for excellence in neurosurgery, research, and patient care. Our physicians, scientists, and educators dedicate themselves to pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in neuroscience and sharing that knowledge with the global community.

Our academic environment is strengthened by visiting neurosurgeons from around the world. During their time at Barrow, these scholars gain firsthand experience with the latest advances in neurosurgery and see how groundbreaking research translates into patient care. In turn, they share valuable international perspectives that enrich the education of our faculty, residents, and students—and help shape how neurosurgical care is delivered globally.

Franke International Visiting Scholars and Clinical Observership Program

The Franke Global Neuroscience Education Center is funding multiple clinical observership positions at Barrow Neurological Institute for 2026. This opportunity is available to neurosurgery and neurology trainees who are enrolled in a residency program in a low- or middle-income country, or neurosurgeons and neurologists who have completed residency within the past five years.

Please note that students currently enrolled in medical school are not eligible for this program. Candidates from high-income countries are not eligible for this program.

This funding covers roundtrip airfare (basic economy) and lodging for up to three months of neurological or neurosurgical observation at Barrow Neurological Institute. Candidates will be selected through a competitive review process conducted by our neurology and neurosurgery committee members.
