Outpatient Movement Disorders Rehabilitation
A diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease or another movement disorder doesn’t mean that you have to stop moving the way that you want to.
At the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center, we offer outpatient movement disorders rehabilitation therapy options that can maximize your quality of life and independence. Our team of physical therapists, occupational therapists, and speech-language pathologists have advanced training in the management of Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders, including certification in the LSVT-BIG, LSVT-LOUD, and PWR!Moves protocols.
Our treatment plans are highly individualized and based on patient performance and goals identified during a one-on-one evaluation session.
Physical therapists (PTs) at our outpatient rehabilitation center can help you improve your strength, flexibility, and posture.
As a result of physical therapy for Parkinson’s disease and movement disorders, you can feel more agile and strong while you are moving, thereby reducing your risk of injury and falls.
Compensatory strategies and exercises trained are specific to your area(s) of need. We will help you incorporate a plan of care that includes
- caregiver training
- development of home exercise programs to ensure carryover and long-term success
Occupational therapists (OTs) focus on therapies that help you retain your independence with self care and leisure activities. We teach you techniques that will help you retain your independence in your activities of daily living (ADLs) or adapt to progressive changes in your health and function. Treatment may include training in the use of adaptive equipment that improves or restores function and independence during tasks.
Speech-language pathologists (SLPs), also known as Speech Therapists (STs), can help you if you have difficulty being understood due to unclear or slurred speech, and/or changes in voice quality. Speech-language pathologists also provide evaluations and interventions for individuals who have experienced difficulty swallowing or those who have had changes in cognitive skills.
