Study: Reducing Complications in Hospitalized Parkinson’s Patients
Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center Director Dr. Holly Shill and movement disorders fellow Dr. Sana Aslam are investigating ways for hospitals to reduce the number of incorrect medications given to hospitalized Parkinson’s disease patients.
According to their abstract published in Neurology, several interventions had been suggested to reduce known inpatient complications in hospitalized Parkinson’s patients, but no data-driven recommendations had been reported.
They found that an intervention consisting of electronic medical record (EMR) alerts and extensive employee training were effective in reducing the frequency of contraindicated medications ordered for Parkinson’s patients.
