Our Mission

Barrow Neurological Institute is the world’s largest neurological disease treatment and research institution. We are committed to exceptional patient care, leading-edge research, and superb educational programs. The interplay of research with everyday patient care is at the core of everything that we do.

In an average year, Barrow Neurological Institute treats nearly 50,000 unique patients, performs about 5,500 neurological surgeries (the highest volume in United States), and has more than 8,000 admissions. The Institute manages approximately 300 clinical trials and 1,000 unique research studies, and it is home to the Ivy Brain Tumor Center, which is focused on Phase 0/II clinical trials.

The Department of Radiation Oncology treats more than 1,000 new neurological patients each year. We use all forms of radiation including intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT), stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS), brachytherapy, and intra-operative radiation. We are also the first clinical site in the world to introduce the Zap-X radiosurgical device. Our physicians have the choice of Cyberknife, Gamma Knife, Zap-X, or linac-based treatment techniques to optimally manage patients with complex conditions. The department clinical and research activities are supported by approximately 30 neurologists, 26 neurosurgeons, 15 neuropsychologists, 30 neuroscientists, and over 100 certified neuroscience registered nurses.
