ALS Association Recognizes Discovery by Barrow, IBM Watson Health

In its top 10 list of advances in ALS research in 2016, the ALS Association recognized a discovery made by Barrow Neurological Institute and IBM Watson Health.

IBM Watson became known around the nation in 2011 when it competed against human contests on Jeopardy and won. The supercomputer helped Barrow scientists identify five genes associated with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis that had never before been linked to the disease.

The discovery gives ALS researchers new insights that will pave the way for the development of new drug targets and therapies to combat one of the world’s most devastating and deadly diseases.
