Newsweek Names Barrow a Top Hospital in the World for Neurosurgery

Newsweek has named Barrow Neurological Institute one of the world’s best hospitals for neurosurgery.

The 2022 rankings, developed in partnership with the global research firm Statista, place Barrow at No. 1 in Arizona, 11 in the United States, and 16 worldwide. The list features 125 hospitals total.

“We appreciate this esteemed recognition by Newsweek’s ranking of the world’s best hospitals,” said Michael T. Lawton, MD, President and CEO of Barrow. “The care we provide our patients with neurological disorders, who often travel to Barrow from around the globe, is the most skilled and advanced in Arizona and often in the world. Our dedicated and talented experts are pushing the boundaries of neuroscience to find therapies and cures for the most complicated conditions affecting the brain and spine.”

Barrow is an international leader in the treatment, research, and education of neurological diseases, conditions, and injuries. Led by Dr. Lawton, one of the world’s top neurosurgeons, the Institute performs more neurosurgical procedures annually than any other facility in the United States.

Barrow is home to 11 state-of-the-art neurosurgery-dedicated operating rooms and two advanced neuroendovascular suites. The Institute’s 430,000-square-foot, 176-bed Robert F. Spetzler Neuroscience Tower is the largest neuroscience center in the nation. Soon, neurosurgeons will also see patients in the brand new 122,000-square-foot Barrow Neuroplex.

Barrow has long been a destination for neuroscience education. Doximity has named the Neurosurgery Residency Program at Barrow No. 2 in nation for program reputation for 2022-2023.

Newsweek ranked hospitals across a total of 10 specialties, expanding on last year’s six specialties. This is the first year the media company has ranked hospitals in the specialty of neurosurgery. Newsweek curated the lists to inform consumers of health care facilities with the most accomplished physicians and diagnosticians and that offer the highest level of care within each specialty.
