Newsweek Ranks Barrow No. 10 Nationally, No. 15 Globally for Neurosurgery
Newsweek has again named Barrow Neurological Institute one of the World’s Best Specialized Hospitals for Neurosurgery.
In its second year of ranking hospitals in this specialty, the media company continues to recognize Barrow as No. 1 in Arizona. The Institute climbed one spot both nationally and worldwide, sitting at No. 10 and 15 respectively for 2023. The list features 125 hospitals total.
Newsweek curated the lists for 11 different categories, in partnership with the global research firm Statista, to inform consumers who are seeking the highest level of care within each specialty.
“Newsweek has recognized Barrow as one of the elite neurosurgical centers in the world, improving our rank over last year,” said Barrow President and CEO Michael T. Lawton, MD. “I am gratified by this recognition because we have been working hard to enhance our patient experience with new buildings and offices, recruit the best talent to our team, and push the boundaries of neuroscience to find new procedures and therapies for our most challenging problems.”
Our momentum is growing ever stronger, and I am certain that Barrow will continue to flourish in the years ahead.

Barrow performs more brain and spine surgeries annually than any other facility in the United States and is at the forefront of harnessing innovative technologies and procedures. These include minimally invasive, microscopic, and robotic techniques.
The Institute is home to 11 state-of-the-art neurosurgery-dedicated operating rooms and two advanced neuroendovascular suites. Already the largest neuroscience center in the nation with its 430,300-square-foot Robert F. Spetzler Neuroscience Tower, Barrow recently expanded its footprint with the 122,000-square-foot Neuroplex.
Additionally, Barrow has long been a destination for neurosurgery education. Doximity, an online networking service for medical professionals, has ranked Barrow No. 2 for neurosurgery residency programs in its 2022-23 Residency Navigator. The designation is based on program reputation.
“Our momentum is growing ever stronger,” said Dr. Lawton, “and I am certain that Barrow will continue to flourish in the years ahead.”
