Newsweek Ranks Barrow No. 14 Globally, No. 10 Nationally for Neurosurgery
Newsweek has released its 2025 list of the World’s Best Specialized Hospitals for Neurosurgery, naming Barrow Neurological Institute as No. 14.
Since launching this global ranking for neurosurgery in 2022, the media company has consistently recognized Barrow as a top-tier hospital. The Institute, based in Phoenix, Arizona, has held the No. 10 spot nationally for three consecutive years and the No. 1 spot in the Southwestern United States for all four years. The list highlights 125 hospitals total.
The rankings culminate the results of a worldwide survey, conducted in partnership with the global research firm Statista, to which tens of thousands of medical professionals were invited to participate. The survey asked respondents to recommend hospitals based on their expertise in one primary medical field, with the option of choosing a secondary area of expertise.
“I couldn’t be more proud of all the dedicated neurosurgeons and clinicians that make inclusion in the top 10 specialized hospitals for neurosurgery in the U.S. a reality. And we appreciate the thousands of patients who travel to Barrow each year for our recommendations and care.”
Michael T. Lawton, MD, President and CEO, Chair of Neurosurgery
“Increasingly, specialized hospitals focused on specific organ systems or diseases are becoming the pathway to expertise and superior outcomes for patients,” said Michael T. Lawton, MD, President and CEO of Barrow and Chair of the Institute’s Department of Neurosurgery. ”Barrow Neurological Institute is an example of such a hospital focused on the brain, spine, and nervous system. I couldn’t be more proud of all the dedicated neurosurgeons and clinicians that make inclusion in the top 10 specialized hospitals for neurosurgery in the U.S. a reality. And we appreciate the thousands of patients who travel to Barrow each year for our recommendations and care.”
Barrow is home to 11 state-of-the-art, neurosurgery-dedicated operating rooms and two advanced neuroendovascular suites. It is the largest neuroscience center in the nation, featuring the 430,000-square-foot Robert F. Spetzler Neuroscience Tower and the 122,000-square-foot Neuroplex. In the past fiscal year, Barrow neurosurgeons performed just over 5,500 brain and spine surgeries.
Because of the Institute’s high volume of patients and world-renowned reputation, Barrow neurosurgeons have experience with even the rarest and most challenging neurosurgical conditions. In fact, patients travel across the globe to undergo neurosurgery at Barrow, often beginning with the Institute’s online Second Opinion Program.
Additionally, Barrow has long served as a destination for neurosurgery education. Doximity, an online networking service for medical professionals, currently ranks the Institute as having the No. 1 neurosurgery residency program based on reputation.
