RESTORE Stroke Study
Double-blinded randomized study investigating deep brain stimulation plus rehabilitation therapy to improve arm mobility in individuals with moderate-to-severe arm impairment following an ischemic stroke.
About
Rehabilitation is a common treatment for arm impairment following an ischemic stroke. This study aims to explore the use of Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) alongside rehabilitation in the management of arm impairment.
Unlike other invasive therapies, DBS precisely targets networks highly relevant to motor function, which can broadly influence neuroplasticity around the stroke. This study will compare rehabilitation alone and rehabilitation with DBS. It is possible that combining DBS with rehabilitation may recruit functional neurons surrounding the stroke injury site, which may promote motor recovery.
