Newsweek Names Barrow Spine Surgeons Among Leading Doctors in US
For the second consecutive year, Newsweek has named Juan Uribe, MD, and Jay Turner, MD, PhD, of Barrow Neurological Institute as two of the top spine surgeons in the United States.
The media company collaborated with the global data intelligence firm Statista, Inc. to identify “America’s Leading Doctors” across 15 surgical specialties, including spine surgery. The firm evaluated a combination of Medicare and commercial data on procedure performance, results of an online survey of tens of thousands of medical professionals, peer quality-of-care assessments, and verification of board certifications.
Newsweek ranked the top 30 doctors in each specialty, positioning Dr. Uribe as No. 17 of the 200 spine surgeons listed. They listed the remaining surgeons alphabetically.
“Once again, I am pleased to congratulate Drs. Uribe and Turner on their inclusion among America’s best spine surgeons, according to Newsweek,” said Barrow President and CEO Michael T. Lawton, MD. “These two neurosurgeons have it all: top talent, subspecialty focus, busy practices, and deep inside knowledge of what it takes to do perfect spine surgery. It’s no wonder that people travel from around the world to become their patients.”
Juan Uribe, MD
Dr. Uribe serves as Chief of the Division of Spinal Disorders, Vice Chair of Neurosurgery, and the Volker K.H. Sonntag Chair of Spine Research at Barrow. He has earned a global reputation for his contributions to refining and expanding the use of minimally invasive techniques to treat complex spinal conditions. Dr. Uribe further demonstrates his commitment to the advancement of spine surgery through his leadership of the Sonntag Spine Center, which emphasizes research, innovation, and global education. He is prolific in academic publishing, having authored more than 200 peer-reviewed articles and 50 book chapters.
“I am honored to receive this awardalongside Dr. Turner and other esteemed spine surgeons,” he said. “Our Spine Program at Barrow is committed to excellent outcomes for patients, unparalleled training for residents and fellows, and game-changing innovation for the field as a whole. I’m very proud to have our dedication to spine recognized by Newsweek once again.”

Dedicated to improving patient outcomes in spine surgery, Dr. Turner launched the Barrow Clinical Outcomes Center. As director of the Center, Dr. Turner and his team systematically collect comprehensive clinical data for analysis and reporting of patient outcomes. “A spinal condition can have an immense impact on someone’s quality of life,” Dr. Turner said. “Having the opportunity to restore function for these patients and give them their lives back is what drives my practice every day. Receiving recognition for the outcomes of my patients is truly an honor to me as a spine surgeon, as well as an inspiration to keep advancing the field.”
