The Neuroradiology Fellowship at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center and Barrow Neurological Institute is a 1 or 2 year post-residency education program. It is accredited by the ACGME. Candidates for the neuroradiology fellowship must be board-eligible or board-certified radiologists.
The fellows rotate on a weekly basis through a wide variety of clinical experiences in the hospital and outpatient settings. Dedicated rotations include:
- MRI, including MRI angiography, functional imaging, and diffusion
There are currently eight CT scanners (three inpatient, two emergency department, two portable, and one outpatient) and 12 MRI scanners (eight inpatient/outpatient, one intraoperative, one emergency department, and two research) at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center and Barrow Neurological Institute. In 2014, the neuroradiology department completed more than 34,000 CT scans and 20,000 MRI scans.
Barrow Neurological Institute also houses the Keller Center for Imaging Innovation. The Keller Center encompasses 5,000 square feet of space dedicated to imaging research. The center was built to bring together clinical, academic, and industry expertise to produce robust clinical imaging technology.
Six neuroradiologists and an MR physicist actively participate in the neuroradiology teaching program, which includes several weekly conferences. Topics include MR physics, various neuroradiology topics, interesting case/case review, IT innovation, healthcare evolution, and socioeconomic topics. The program also maintains extensive teaching files.
The program alternates between four and five incoming neuroradiology fellows per year. The nine fellows share call responsibilities equally, with a frequency of approximately one weeknight in nine and every ninth weekend. As St. Joseph’s Hospital is home to a radiology residency program, a radiology resident is in house to review most after-hour imaging studies. On-call responsibilities for fellows primarily involve performing emergent procedures and occasionally providing assistance to the on-call residents.
