Neuropsychology Residency Program
From the Program Director
Dear Clinical Neuropsychology Residency Applicants,
The Department of Neuropsychology at Barrow Neurological Institute offers a 2-year postdoctoral residency program in adult clinical neuropsychology that is APPCN-accredited and meets the Houston Guidelines for postdoctoral fellowship training in clinical neuropsychology. Barrow Neurological Institute at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center is an ideal training setting for neuropsychologists since it has long been recognized for providing innovative care for people with disorders of the brain and spine and consistently ranks among the best hospitals in the United States for neurology and neurosurgery.
Our Department of Neuropsychology faculty consists of 16 neuropsychologists (including seven ABPP board-certified neuropsychologists) and two rehabilitation psychologists who see both inpatients and outpatients on neurosurgical, neurological, and rehabilitation services. Barrow is a high-volume neurosurgical center and is home to one of the nation’s busiest deep brain stimulation programs, a comprehensive epilepsy surgery center, the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center, one of the most active brain tumor treatment centers in the U.S., and a Level I Trauma Center with a 52-bed inpatient neurorehabilitation unit. The Institute also provides care to more stroke patients than any other center in the Southwest and participates in the Arizona Alzheimer’s Consortium. There are prestigious residency programs in neurosurgery, neurology, and neuroradiology, in addition to our postdoctoral training program for advanced clinical work and research in human neuropsychology.
Barrow neuropsychology residents are valued members of our team whose time is spent acquiring neuropsychological knowledge and skills required for eventual independent practice. We offer residents a wide breadth and volume of patients with neurological disorders as well as dedicated educational seminars and research training. Barrow offers two tracks of training within the Residency Program in Clinical Neuropsychology:
- General clinical neuropsychology
- Neurorehabilitation with a specialty in neuropsychological rehabilitation
The residency training program exposes residents to a wide variety of neurological and neurosurgical disorders to familiarize them with the most meaningful way of assessing patients and developing practical and meaningful treatment programs and/or recommendations. In doing so, residents learn to convert assessment information into practical healthcare decisions for patients and to communicate with physicians in a manner that illuminates the neuropsychological understanding of the patient.
The faculty and staff of the Department of Neuropsychology are committed to providing comprehensive, state of the art training to our neuropsychology residents. We welcome applications from all qualified residency candidates and hope you will consider Barrow Neurological Institute for your professional training.
