Varun Kumar, MD, is a neurologist in the Epilepsy Center and an assistant professor in the Department of Neurology at Barrow Neurological Institute. He is board certified in neurology and clinical neurophysiology by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.

Dr. Kumar’s expertise includes the diagnosis and management of epilepsy and seizure disorders, with a particular focus on patients with drug-resistant epilepsy, temporal lobe epilepsy, tumor-related epilepsy, and epilepsy surgeries. He is experienced in electroneurodiagnostic technologies, including electroencephalography (EEG), stereoelectroencephalography (SEEG), video EEG monitoring, and intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring. He is a member of the American Academy of Neurology, the American Clinical Neurophysiology Society, and the American Epilepsy Society.

Dr. Kumar earned his medical degree from B.J. Government Medical College and Sassoon General Hospital in Pune, India. He completed his neurology residency at the University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine in Tampa, Florida and an epilepsy and clinical neurophysiology fellowship at the McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois.

Dr. Kumar’s research interests include seizure disorders, stereotactic EEG, refractory epilepsy and its management through surgical and device-based therapies, tumor-related epilepsy, and the epidemiology of epilepsy-associated morbidity and mortality.
