Advancing Neuroradiology in Tanzania: Connecting Across Continents

In the spirit of global collaboration and innovation, the Department of Neuroradiology at Barrow Neurological Institute has been actively engaged in the Barrow Global initiative,
forging meaningful connections that extend beyond borders. One of the most impactful
aspects of our work has been our ongoing partnership with the Kilimanjaro Christian
Medical Center (KCMC) in Moshi, Tanzania.
In January 2024, I traveled to Moshi with two of my colleagues, John Karis, MD, and Dane Hellwig, MD, to provide hands-on clinical support, offer educational training to radiology residents, and help develop imaging protocols aimed at improving patient care and expanding access to brain MRI.
This trip was instrumental in assessing the existing challenges within the radiology
department at KCMC and implementing solutions tailored to their unique needs.
One of the most significant outcomes of this collaboration was the establishment of
rapid MRI acquisition protocols. These new protocols have streamlined imaging
workflows, increasing patient throughput and with potential to reduce costs. By optimizing imaging efficiency, we have helped expand access to crucial neuroimaging, which is vital for diagnosing and managing neurological conditions in underserved populations.
Beyond the initial visit, our commitment to KCMC has continued. For over a year, we
have hosted weekly virtual educational lectures for KCMC’s radiology residents,
fostering an ongoing exchange of knowledge and expertise. These sessions have
covered a range of neuroradiology topics, enhancing the residents’ diagnostic skills and
clinical acumen. Additionally, we remain actively involved in reviewing complex cases,
providing real-time consultations to support patient care.
This partnership exemplifies the theme of “Connections”; bridging geographical divides to share knowledge, improve patient care, and strengthen global medical education. As
we look ahead, we are excited to further expand our collaboration, exploring innovative
solutions such as artificial intelligence applications in neuroradiology and sustainable
imaging service models to enhance global health care.

Our commitment to this partnership extends into the future, as we plan a return trip to
Moshi in 2026 to continue our work on site. Additionally, our ultimate goal is to establish
an opportunity for one of KCMC’s radiology residents to complete a fellowship with us at
Barrow Neurological Institute. This initiative would provide invaluable hands-on
training and foster deeper professional connections, strengthening the long-term impact
of our collaboration.

advancing neuroradiology and improving patient outcomes worldwide.
