AAN Awards

Barrow neurology resident Tshibambe Nathanael Tshimbombu, MD, has received two separate awards from the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) for his work in stroke on a global scale: the 2026 Kenneth M. Viste, Jr., MD, Patient Advocate of the Year Award and a 2026 Palatucci Action Plan Support Grant. The advocacy award honors the legacy of Dr. Kenneth M. Viste, Jr., a former AAN president whose lifelong commitment to patient-centered neurology, community service, and advocacy set a national standard. The Palatucci grant supports Dr. Tshimbombu’s “Bongo Initiative,” which aims to establish an online platform through which Congolese physicians can receive bi-monthly, high-yield stroke education delivered by global stroke experts. The project is part of his larger vision for reshaping the landscape of stroke education in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
