Barrow Global Neuroradiology
Advancing Neuroimaging Capacity Worldwide
The Department of Neuroradiology at Barrow Neurological Institute is a key contributor to the Barrow Global mission of expanding high-quality neuroscience education and clinical care across low- and middle-income countries. Since formally joining the initiative in 2024, the department has helped establish sustainable neuroimaging training programs, optimized imaging protocols for resource-limited environments, and strengthened international partnerships—beginning with Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre (KCMC) in Moshi, Tanzania.
Through the Franke Global Neuroscience Education Center, Barrow neuroradiology faculty, fellows, and global health partners are creating a long-term impact by improving patient access to imaging, supporting radiology education, and building local expertise in advanced MRI and CT interpretation.
Education and Training Opportunities
Tanzania Neuroradiology Lecture Series
Barrow faculty and fellows provide a biweekly live lecture series for radiology residents and faculty at KCMC. All sessions are recorded and archived in a digital teaching library, offering on-demand access to instruction around the clock.
- Fellows (PGY-6 and PGY-7) participate as co-instructors, gaining valuable experience in global health teaching.
- The series has become a core educational resource for trainees in Tanzania and a model for future global neuroradiology programs.
In-Country Training Opportunities
Barrow neuroradiology fellows and faculty are invited to join future missions to Tanzania, including the next planned visit in fall 2026, where they participate in protocol development, hands-on teaching, and collaborative clinical care.
Impact to Date
The department’s first global health mission in January 2024 laid the groundwork for an ongoing partnership. Accomplishments included:
- Designing a 12-minute quick-protocol brain MRI, reducing scan fees by more than 40% and expanding access for underserved patients.
- Optimizing CT and MRI protocols across a variety of neurological conditions.
- Launching collaborative research initiatives to improve neuroimaging quality in resource-constrained settings.
- Providing daily teaching rounds, case reviews, and multidisciplinary clinical education for radiology, neurosurgery, and neurology trainees.
- Establishing the equipment, digital infrastructure, and educational framework for future remote and on-site activities.
International Observerships
Planning is underway to host a fully funded one-year neuroradiology observership or fellowship for a radiology resident from KCMC in Phoenix, Arizona. Barrow Global and the Barrow Neurological Foundation are coordinating visa support, housing, stipend funding, and clinical integration to help establish a long-term bidirectional exchange pipeline.
Future Direction
The Department of Neuroradiology is committed to expanding its global footprint through the following initiatives and projects:
- Fall 2026 return mission to Tanzania, focused on advanced neuroimaging education, PACS optimization, and launching a “train-the-trainer” program empowering KCMC faculty to teach the quick-protocol nationally.
- Bidirectional exchange pathway for trainees and faculty between Barrow and partner institutions.
- Global Neuroradiology micro-fellowship (3–6 months) designed for radiologists in low- and middle-income countries, combining remote lectures, virtual case conferences, and short-term rotations at Barrow.
- Expansion of the digital lecture library, including Swahili subtitles and offline access for regions with limited bandwidth.
Global Partner Site
The flagship international partner of Barrow Global Neuroradiology since 2024, Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre (KCMC) in Moshi, Tanzania serves as the primary hub for educational exchange, protocol development, research collaboration, and on-site training.

A Growing Commitment to Global Neuroscience
The Barrow Neuroradiology Department is committed to enhancing global access to high-quality imaging, fostering international training partnerships, and strengthening local capacity for diagnosing neurological diseases. Through sustained collaboration, innovation, and education, the department continues to help expand the reach of Barrow Global and improve neuroimaging care worldwide.
