Neurocritical Care Fellowship

About Our Fellowship

From the Program Director

Welcome to the Neurocritical Care Fellowship at Barrow Neurological Institute. We have built an outstanding neurocritical care division dedicated to providing the highest level of care for our patients. I am proud to have been a part of this team from inception and to lead the charge as we now start the fellowship program to foster the next generation of leaders in neurocritical care. At Barrow, you will find opportunities for hands-on learning, innovative research, and a supportive environment that will accelerate your professional growth. We look forward to welcoming you to our community.

Program Director, Neurocritical Care Fellowship

Program Description

At Barrow, we aim to lead aspiring neurointensivists to obtain proficiency in both neurological and neurosurgical emergencies and to attain excellence in the management of general critical care issues. Given our extensive referral network, we see diverse pathologies spanning all neurological and neurosurgical subspecialties. St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center is a level 1 trauma center, giving our fellows exposure to traumatic brain and spine injuries. We offer a variety of multimodal monitoring methods in the neurocritical care ICU, including but not limited to:

  • EEG
  • ICP
  • CPP
  • PbtO2
  • TCDs

We train our fellows to manage uniquely complex neuroscience cases and a wide range of general critical care disorders during their training. We provide a collaborative environment amongst various medical specialties to train our fellows to become well-rounded intensivists. This includes obtaining aptitude in at least the following ICU procedures:

  • Endotracheal intubations
  • Bronchoscopy
  • Central line placement
  • Arterial line insertion
  • Temporary dialysis catheter insertion
  • Chest tube placement
  • Lumbar puncture
  • Bedside point of care ultrasound

Fellows will have the opportunity to rotate through the following areas to enhance their knowledge further:

  • Medical ICU
  • Trauma ICU
  • Surgical ICU
  • Cardiovascular ICU
  • TCD
  • Vascular Neurology
  • Anesthesiology
  • Electroencephalography
  • Neuroradiology
  • Neuro-oncology

Additionally, fellows will be able to schedule rotations in other fields of interest during the training program.

Barrow Neurological Institute offers trainees endless opportunities to foster a career in academic medicine. Fellows can participate in research projects in any area of interest under the guidance of a research faculty mentor.
