Pituitary Center

At a Glance: Our Pituitary Center

The diagnosis of a pituitary tumor or disorder can set questions and concerns racing. Because pituitary tumors and the diseases they cause are rare, many people have no idea what to expect after diagnosis. What comes next—where do you or your loved one go from here?

At the Pituitary Center at Barrow Neurological Institute, you’ve arrived at the right place. Here, our specialists emphasize education and involvement to lay the groundwork for successful pituitary tumor and disorder treatment. And because our doctors and nurses treat more people with pituitary disorders than any other team in the Southwest, you can rest assured that you’ll be in very experienced hands.

Our pituitary experts treat all tumors, diseases, and neuro-endocrine disorders involving the pituitary gland, including but not limited to:

  • Macro- and microadenomas
  • Hypopituitarism
  • Cushing’s Disease
  • Gigantism and acromegaly
  • Diabetes insipidus

The Barrow Difference

Mastering the Master Gland: The Most Experienced Center in the Southwest

Barrow Neurological Institute is the most experienced pituitary center in the Southwest. Year after year, no other hospital has performed more pituitary surgeries than we do. In fact, we performed six times as many pituitary procedures as any other hospital in Arizona in 2018.

What’s more, patients travel from around the country to come to our Center. Those who have surgery by an experienced surgeon have better outcomes than those who have a surgeon who’s only performed the surgery a handful of times per year. It’s not hyperbole when we say our Pituitary Center doctors and nurses have seen nearly every kind of pituitary tumor and disorder imaginable.

Not only are we a destination for receiving the most advanced pituitary treatment and care, Barrow is also a place where you or your loved one can help contribute to the scientific understanding and therapeutic research surrounding acromegaly, adenomas, gigantism, and other disorders that implicate the pituitary gland.

Certified Neuroscience Nurses

The experience of our staff doesn’t drop off outside of our neurosurgeons and neurologists. Every one of our nurses at our Pituitary Center are required to undergo rigorous training in the nuances and complexities of advanced neuroscience nursing practice. This guarantees that whenever you see a Barrow nurse at your bedside, you’ll know you’re receiving expert care.

Little known fact: Many of the surgical treatments and protocols used on patients at our Center were researched and developed on site and have, over time, spread to many other top hospitals around the world.

Proximity to Numerous Professionals

Many pituitary disorders can cause problems in your body far beyond the pituitary gland itself. Our Center’s location at Dignity Health St. Joseph’s—the largest hospital in Arizona—means that our patients also have access to a tremendous array of specialists. And because there’s a high level of medical diversity within minutes of our doors, odds are that you’ll be able to concentrate all of your care under one roof.

"Dr. Yuen was able to quickly assess the situation and, over time, has literally given me my life back. He gave me back things that I hadn’t even realized that I was missing out on."

"When I went to Barrow and talked to Dr. Little, he made me feel at ease. He then explained the procedure to me which made me feel much better. It was going to be a less-invasive approach than I thought."

"Dr. Barranco’s skill, I think, speaks for itself. But the unsung heroes here are the four nurses I had in intensive care. They did more than just follow the doctor’s instructions; they also anticipated what I needed at times when I didn’t even know I needed it."
