Barrow Ranked a Top Neurological Hospital by Newsweek

Newsweek has named Barrow Neurological Institute one of America’s Best Neurological Hospitals for 2024. The No. 18 ranking recognizes the Institute’s expertise in diagnosing and treating neurological conditions, specifically noting its proficiency in epilepsy and Parkinson’s disease care, brain tumor surgery, and spinal fusion.

The media organization partnered with the global data firm Statista, Inc. to compile this inaugural list of 175 hospitals. They collected data from health care professionals working in neurology, hospital quality metrics, and results from patient experience surveys.

“I am pleased that Newsweek recognized the outstanding clinical care provided by our physicians and staff,” said Brad Racette, MD, FAAN, Chair of Neurology and Senior Vice President at Barrow. “I am proud of the cutting-edge, patient-centered, and compassionate clinical care that has made Barrow Neurological Institute a national destination for neurological care.”

The Barrow Difference

The ever-growing Department of Neurology at Barrow consists of a diverse faculty of more than 60 neurologists, scientists, and other providers. Neurological care spans 13 subspecialties, and the Department is home to designated centers of excellence in multiple conditions, from common to rare. These include epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease, stroke, multiple sclerosis (MS), Lewy body dementia, muscular dystrophy, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), ataxia, hereditary neuropathy, and Huntington’s disease.

Because many neurological conditions often require a multidisciplinary treatment approach, Barrow neurologists work closely with the Institute’s neurosurgeons, neuropsychologists, neuroscience nurses, neuro-rehabilitation clinicians, and other experts to deliver comprehensive, individualized care.

“I am proud of the cutting-edge, patient-centered, and compassionate clinical care that has made Barrow Neurological Institute a national destination for neurological care.”

While caring for patients today, the neurology faculty at Barrow share a commitment to finding the treatments of tomorrow. They demonstrate this mission by performing clinically relevant research, training the next generation of neurologists, and fostering global partnerships.

“This recognition as one of the nation’s best neurological hospitals is meaningful because it reflects the explosive growth in size and talent of our neurology department under the leadership of Dr. Racette during his short two-year tenure,” said Barrow President and CEO Michael T. Lawton, MD, who recruited Dr. Racette for the position. “And our expanding neurology faculty is bringing a concerted focus on clinical research and quality patient care.”
