Dr. Fonkem earned his medical degree from the Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine at Ohio University in Athens. He completed his neurology residency at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in Columbus and a fellowship in neuro-oncology at Harvard Medical School Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston.

Dr. Fonkem’s research interests include brain tumor biomarkers in blood and saliva, new drug treatments for brain cancer, vulnerable populations with brain cancer, global oncology, and quality-of-life challenges in people with brain tumors.

Dr. Fonkem established and leads the neuro-oncological observational fellowship program for Africa, with the goal of teaching Sub Saharan African physicians to deliver evidence-based, high-quality neuro-oncologic care.
